Larsen Marziale, 18, and his brother Reese, 15, walked into the visitors’ center near the Rome Italy Temple not knowing what to expect.

The Mesa, Arizona, residents were impressed with the white Carrera marble statue of Jesus and the 12 disciples. They testified that members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints put Christ at the center of their lives.

Then they turned the corner and saw a panorama of brilliantly colored stained and painted glass panels with Christ as the principal character. It was their introduction to Come Unto Me.

“Wow was my first response,” says Larsen. “I agree,” adds Reese. “It was so colorful.”

“I loved the glass,” adds Larsen. “I found it so relatable. Christ is a huge figure, and he reaches out to us. This was one of the highlights of my trip to Italy.”

The brothers were part of a tour group that traveled to Italy this month to attend the Rome Temple open house and see the nearby visitors’ center. The emphasis on Christ was especially meaningful to Larsen. His best friend died a couple of weeks before the trip, and Larsen brought a pair of her yellow (her favorite color) shoes with him. At significant sites, he quietly placed her shoes and photographed them. It was his way of honoring her.

This and other visitor stories are part part of a series covering the Come Unto Me exhibit created through The Roots of Humanity Foundation with help from Tom Holdman and several colleagues at Holdman Studios.
