From Sketch to Stained Glass: The Creation Process

Creating a stained glass window is both an artistic and technical journey—a process that blends classical craftsmanship with modern tools, and imagination with precision.

Each window begins as a drawn sketch. These early illustrations lay the foundation for the story the window will tell. From there, the concept is brought to life digitally using tools like Photoshop and Illustrator. For more detailed or figurative panels, real-life models are used to pose, helping capture accurate expressions, movement, and emotion within the design.

Once the composition is complete, lead lines are added—a crucial step that determines how the image will be divided into individual pieces of glass. These lines not only form the structural framework that holds the window together, but also contribute to the visual language of the design itself.

Next, the lead line drawing is printed on vinyl and carefully numbered, like a puzzle waiting to be assembled. Sheets of colored and textured glass are selected to match the artwork’s mood and message. Each vinyl shape is placed on the appropriate glass sheet, and every cut is made with intention to bring out depth and meaning in the design.

For especially intricate panels, the ancient art of glass painting comes into play. Using Ruesche paint mixed with clove oil, artists paint directly onto the glass to add shading, detail, and realism. These pieces are then fired in a kiln—sometimes multiple times—to build rich, layered depth. This stage can take several weeks to complete.

Once all pieces are cut, painted, and prepared, they move from the light table to the building table, where the window is assembled. Depending on the design, either copper foil or traditional lead came is used to join the glass segments. After each piece is carefully fitted, the panel is soldered, and steel reinforcements are added along key lead lines to ensure lasting structural strength.

Finally, the finished window is raised to the light—where the real magic happens. Whether installed in front of natural sunlight or lit by custom-built LED panels, each stained glass piece glows with life, color, and meaning.
